Saturday was graduation–one of my favorite days of the year.

This year the ceremony started at 8:30, which meant we had to line up fully decked out by 7:30. A heavy fog hung in the air that early. As I walked to the stadium, I passed through a particularly heavy patch of fog and walked by a man and little girl. Some of you know, I’m growing my hair out. When I burst through the fog, my academic robe fully unfurled, hair tousling in a slight breeze, the little girl said, “Oh, look, Daddy. It’s Jesus.”

Depression vs. Graduation

During the second year of my Ph.D., I got really depressed. It was the first time in my life I had ever experienced sustained, unexplained depression. It lasted for about two months and the tipping point was graduation–just not my own.

Friends were graduating in December and I went to support them. During the ceremony, I began crying as I watched the graduates walk across the stage. Think of a marathon runner halfway through the race getting to see people crossing the finish line. “This can actually be done,” I thought to myself.

These last few months, I have become depressed again. No church, no budding friendships, and overload of busy-ness at work have affected me. Last week, I mentioned this during class. A student said they were thinking about not walking at graduation, so I shared the above story with them. “If not for yourself, do it for some depressed person in the audience.” Well, guess what I walked in to find in this morning’s class.

The students all had on construction paper mortarboards (a/k/a graduation hats), with a “diploma” in-hand.

Then as Pomp and Circumstance (a/k/a the graduation song) played in the background, they brought me diplomas which were actually encouragement notes.

Needless to say, I was beyond encouraged. Here they are practicing for their graduation, which is in two weeks for most of them.

Thanks, COMM 410 class. Congratulations on making it into my list of stories to tell each semester. I’ll cherish it.
